EUI Wraps Up International Workshop on AI in Collaboration with ITU and EY

The workshop titled “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence” has concluded its activities at Egypt University of Informatics (EUI), which was selected by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to host the event as part of a two-year program organized in collaboration with Ernst & Young (EY). The program includes a series of workshops held across 12 countries worldwide, aiming to empower women in modern technology fields and enhance their participation in the labor market, particularly in future-oriented jobs driven by the technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

In his remarks at the closing session, Prof. Ahmed Hamad, Acting President of Egypt University of Informatics, stated that hosting this workshop reflects the university’s commitment to organizing international and regional events that contribute to strengthening the capabilities of its students and familiarizing them with the latest global technology trends. He added that such initiatives help develop both scientific and practical skills, enhancing students’ competitiveness in local and international labor markets. The AI workshop, he noted, focused on equipping participants with a well-rounded mix of digital and managerial skills to prepare them for active participation in innovation and tech entrepreneurship.

Dr. Amani Eissa, Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at EUI, explained that the workshop held under the auspices of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and attended by first- and second-year female students from the university’s four faculties featured a comprehensive curriculum developed in collaboration with the ITU. The program aimed to inspire and educate participants about the technical and ethical dimensions of artificial intelligence. Topics covered included an introduction to AI, big data, machine learning, programming, and data handling, culminating in a discussion session on ethics, bias, and AI risks.

Dr. Eissa added that the workshop sought to introduce participants to the practical applications of AI across various sectors and to highlight employment opportunities in AI-driven industries both in Egypt and abroad. Discussions also addressed the role of women in identifying and addressing challenges to gender equality in their communities and in advocating for more inclusive system design to ensure that the benefits of AI reach everyone. She cited several examples of successful AI projects that achieved positive social impact, such as applications helping small farmers diagnose crop diseases and determine the best treatment methods, intelligent systems providing education to remote areas, and AI-based solutions for monitoring water and air quality in affected communities.
