EUI Student Mohamed Alaa Excels in Dual Degree Year at Purdue University with Outstanding Achievements

Egypt University of Informatics (EUI) proudly celebrates the remarkable accomplishments of Mohamed Alaa, one of its distinguished students, who has completed his dual-degree study abroad year at Purdue West Lafayette, USA. This achievement marks a significant milestone within EUI’s prestigious dual-degree program and highlights the caliber of talent the university nurtures.

During this transformative academic year, Mohamed pursued his Bachelor’s in Computer Engineering at Purdue—renowned globally as one of the top engineering institutions. His journey was marked by exceptional academic performance and meaningful research contributions. He completed the year with a perfect 4.0 GPA, excelling in advanced coursework including Networks & Security, Software Engineering, and several graduate-level classes such as Data Mining, Machine Learning, Reinforcement Learning, and Applied Quantum Computing. His stellar academic performance earned him a spot on the Dean’s List for both semesters.

In addition to his academic excellence, Mohamed was awarded the OUR Scholarship by Purdue’s Office of Undergraduate Research in recognition of his work as a Research Assistant in the field of Human-AI Interaction. Under the mentorship of Professor Hyesun Choung, he developed an AI Tutor chatbot based on Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) technology. The chatbot was designed to support students in practicing intercultural communication in a safe, interactive environment and received highly positive feedback from users.

Mohamed also served as a Teaching Assistant for the “Python for Data Science” course across two semesters. In this role, he helped students understand key concepts such as data cleaning, visualization, and statistical analysis, while guiding them through assignments and hands-on projects.

For his Senior Design Project, Mohamed turned his focus to the critical area of AI safety. Working under the supervision of Professor James Davis, he conducted research on adversarial jailbreak attacks on Large Language Models (LLMs). This work culminated in a published research paper, contributing to the growing academic discourse around AI security. Read the paper here.

Reflecting on his experience, Mohamed expressed deep gratitude to EUI and the late Professor Reem Bahgat (may Allah rest her soul), whose support and vision enabled him to embark on this transformative educational journey. He is set to graduate in Spring 2026 and remains committed to advancing the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and software engineering.

Mohamed’s achievements stand as a powerful testament to EUI’s mission to provide global educational opportunities and to prepare students to become leaders and innovators in the digital era.
