EUI offers 14 solutions to cope with changes during its participation in the Climate Summit COP27

Egypt University of Informatics (EUI) organized a session for technical solutions to cope with climate change as part of the COP 27 Climate Summit in Sharm el-Sheikh under the auspices of his excellency President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and with the broad participation of the attendees. The 14 universities provided a solution to address this phenomenon that threatens the world.

 

The session was moderated by Prof. Reem Bahgat, President of EUI, and Dr. Amani Eissa, Head of  Business Development and President of Climathon 2022  Organizing Committee, In the presence of leaders from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, and specialists from the same sector from the Conference, In addition to Dr. Azza El-Shinnawy, Head of Egypt, Amazon Web Services Worldwide Public sector, through Zoom Technology as well as students and start-ups winning in Climathon 2022.

 

EUI presented technological innovations at the "Tech-Based Innovations For Climate Challenges " session (Climathon 2022). Those innovations would contribute to reducing the risk of climate change and carbon emissions among the winning legislators of the climate change hackathon organized last September under the auspices of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Through the events of the COP 27 Climate Summit in Sharm el-Sheikh.

 

Prof. Reem Bahgat, President of EUI, emphasized that the university is keeping with the digital development age. Therefore, we organized the Climate Change Hackathon Competition to serve as a platform for practical solutions to this crisis and to address it by harnessing technology science to halt its ramifications, ensuring development, well-being, and environmental preservation through so-called digital opportunities that help monitor and measure climate change.

 

Prof. Bahgat explained that thanks to ICT's power, we can find innovative solutions to reduce the risks of climate change to achieve the world's sustainable development targets. Technology is a critical catalyst for change for the better by helping accelerate progress and advance solutions in all areas through innovation.

 

Dr. Amani Eissa, Head of Business Development at EUI, said: "Climathon 2022, organized by the university in partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) under the auspices of the Ministries of Communications and Information Technology and Higher Education and Scientific Research, and with the support of the Egyptian Post Authority, Intel, the Information Technology Industry Development Authority, aimed at harnessing technology in finding solutions to address the impact of climate changes in a sophisticated and effective manner, which has already occurred from the participants of approximately 1,500 students representing 50 Egyptian, Arab and African universities from 33 countries. "

 

Dr. Amani Eissa explained that the organization of the hackathon came from the pivotal role of Egypt University of Informatics as an educational and research institution that embraces innovation. She pointed out that all participants have a passion for learning more as leaders who can bring about change and growth in Egypt's technology sector while being able to address climate change with their innovations.

 

Dr.  Amani Eissa, during the session, detailed through the live explanation and video recordings the ideas and prototypes of the 12 projects winning the Student Climathon Awards from 8 different universities in Egypt, Jordan, and Mauritius; in the areas of water Stewardship Clean Energy, Communities Empowerment, and Sustainable Cities.

 

The session also reviewed two promising Egyptian climate change start-ups who won the start-up's Climate Hackathon Awards. The first is SUNPAVE, represented by one of its founders, the engineer Azza Faiad. SUNPave is an Egyptian company with English patents in creating tile-shaped solar panels that can be used in paving roads, cladding roofs, and building walls.

 

The session was also hosted by Carboni Bank, represented by its founder, Dr. Amir Girgis, who works in environmental fintech. This Egyptian company aims to establish the first virtual carbon bank in Africa to establish an integrated framework to benefit from carbon footprint payments in the African country. It also aims to help producers deal with the implications of carbon footprint for the marketing and export of their products to the global markets.

 

EUI is the first specialized university in the Middle East and Africa in Communications, Information Technology, and affected areas. It was established by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, in cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, to become a leading academic institution offering specialized educational programs, to meet the needs of the labor market of state-of-the-art ICT specialists based in the Knowledge City at the New Administrative Capital.

 

EUI has four faculties: (Computing and Information Sciences, Engineering, Business Informatics, Digital Arts & Design), offering 16 specialized educational programs to meet the need of the labor market from specialists in the latest fields of ICT such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Engineering, Electronics Industry &Communications, Business Analytics, Digital Marketing, Animation Arts, User Experience and Electronic Game Design.
