Prof. Reem Bahgat Highlights EUI's Role in Shaping Egypt's Digital Future at the Egyptian Parliament

The Egyptian Parliament's Communications and Information Technology Committee, chaired by MP Ahmed Badawy, held a session highlighting the achievements of Egypt University of Informatics (EUI). Discussions focused on the university’s role in advancing Egypt’s technological capabilities and aligning with global trends since its establishment in 2021. Prof Reem Bahgat, EUI's President, emphasized that the university was created under H.E.President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's initiative to produce a skilled Egyptian workforce equipped to meet the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. With a focus on artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and embedded systems, EUI has become the central pillar of the Knowledge City technology hub in the New Administrative Capital, modeled after Silicon Valley in the United States.

EUI has been instrumental in supporting Egypt’s goal to become a global center for advanced technology industries. It fosters collaboration among key institutions within Knowledge City, including the Information Technology Institute, the National Telecommunications Institute, and the National Academy for Information Technology for Persons with Disabilities. Prof. Bahgat noted that startups, such as those supported by the Imhotep Center for Innovation and Development, are key partners in this ecosystem, providing students with hands-on training that complements the university’s rigorous academic curriculum, modeled on global best practices.

Since its inception, EUI has experienced significant growth. The university started in 2021 with 169 students, including 29 top high school graduates who received full scholarships through a presidential initiative. By 2024, enrollment had increased to 1,290 students, including 99 top-ranking high school graduates. This growth demonstrates the growing trust in EUI’s academic quality, the expertise of its faculty, and its partnerships with international universities. Dr. Bahgat highlighted that many EUI students studying abroad through dual-degree agreements with Purdue West Lafayette University, the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, and the University of Ottawa have achieved exceptional results, reflecting the university’s commitment to academic excellence.

EUI offers a wide range of specialized programs tailored to meet the demands of the modern job market. The Faculty of Business Informatics includes programs such as Business Analytics, Digital Marketing, and FinTech, while the Faculty of Computing and Information Sciences provides tracks in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Cybersecurity. The Faculty of Engineering features Mechatronics and Computer Engineering, with plans to introduce Industrial Engineering, while the Faculty of Digital Arts and Design focuses on Game Design and User Experience Design.

The university has also made significant strides in research and innovation. It has published numerous studies in international journals and established an Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center to empower young Egyptians to turn their ideas into successful projects, contributing to the digital economy and sustainable development. EUI has hosted prominent events such as the Data Science and AI Conference, which was held for the first time in Egypt in 2023  in collaboration with Meta, showcasing its leadership in engaging with the global technology community.

Although EUI awaits its first graduating class in 2025 to qualify for broader global rankings, it has already been recognized for its contributions to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Prof. Bahgat shared that the university’s permanent campus in Knowledge City is nearly complete, with interior work in progress. The campus, designed without barriers, integrates seamlessly with neighboring institutions and companies, reflecting a modern approach to fostering collaboration and innovation.

Prof. Bahgat concluded by expressing gratitude to the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and the university’s numerous academic and industry partners. She reaffirmed EUI’s commitment to providing high-quality education, driving technological innovation, and supporting Egypt’s digital transformation. Through its strategic vision and strong partnerships, EUI continues to solidify its position as a cornerstone of Egypt’s ambition to lead in the global technology landscape.
