English Department

The English language program is designed to fulfill the English language proficiency required for studying at EUI’s different faculties according to the different faculties’ Bylaws, since the language of instruction is English. 


EUI uses the computer-based Pearson Versant Placement Test to place students according to their placement test score as follows:

  • Students with score 20 – 38 are placed in the First English Foundation Course (HUM001) when starting in the Fall Semester.

  • Students with score 39 – 56 are placed in the Second English Foundation Course (HUM002) when starting in the Fall Semester.

  • Students with score 57+ would start their first English credit course when starting in the Fall Semester.

The English Department provides an excellent opportunity to students who are weak in English by providing two non-credit courses of General English (HUM001 & HUM002) according to the students’ English language level needs and placement test score (as stated above).


The program is tailored to meet the challenges of the 21st century, and it also trains students to use their critical thinking, evaluation and analysis skills in order to be prepared for the competition of the job market.


The English language credit courses provided at EUI’s different faculties are as follows:


Business English 
This course is designed to prepare students to use English in the future work situation. Students will develop English skills with a focus on business contexts and environments, and they will learn vocabulary that is used regularly in the business world. This course will help practice and enrich communication and work-related skills like meetings, negotiations, bargaining, in addition to writing business emails and reports. All skills are taught by using English in specific business settings and situations.


Academic Writing 
This course prepares students to handle reading academic textbooks (reading academic texts effectively and critically) as well as paraphrasing, summarizing, and synthesizing what they read. It also prepares the students for writing an academic argumentative essay which is the basis for research paper writing. 


Technical Writing
This course is an advanced-level course that requires extensive reading and writing. It covers the information about writing from the prewriting stages of planning and organization through actual writing, revision and editing. Students get to work on several projects to create different kinds of technical documents while conscious of the principles of audience analysis and document design.
